Greenland Permit Unlocks New Heavy REE Supply
Critical Metals Corp. secures long-term approval for Tanbreez mine.
Critical Metals Corp. (CRML) announced on October 5, 2026, that it received formal mining approvals from the Greenland government for its Tanbreez mine. The permit is valid through 2050. This decision greenlights a significant new source of rare earth elements (REEs) outside of China, a development with implications for the entire critical minerals sector. The news comes as major lithium players like Albemarle (ALB) face continued price target adjustments, with BMO Capital, UBS, and Mizuho all cutting their targets in early October. This contrast highlights a divergence in sentiment across the critical minerals space, with REE project advancement gaining traction.

The Mechanism of Rare Earth Supply

Rare earth elements are a group of 17 chemically similar metallic elements critical for modern technology, found in everything from electric vehicle motors to wind turbines and defense systems. The challenge with REEs is not their scarcity in the Earth's crust, but their difficult and expensive extraction and separation. REEs rarely occur in concentrated, easily mineable deposits. Instead, they are typically dispersed within other minerals. Once mined, the ore must undergo a complex chemical process to separate the individual rare earth oxides from each other. This separation is technically demanding. Each REE has slightly different chemical properties, requiring precise solvent extraction techniques to isolate them. The process is energy-intensive and generates significant waste, making environmental permitting and operational costs substantial. The global supply chain has been dominated by China due to decades of investment in these specialized processing capabilities. New projects outside China aim to establish independent processing capacity, reducing reliance on a single source.

Companies in the Critical Minerals Space

The critical minerals sector sees activity across various stages, from exploration to recycling and processing. Critical Metals Corp. (CRML), with its Tanbreez project in Greenland, now holds a key permit through 2050. This project focuses on heavy rare earth elements, a segment particularly constrained by Chinese dominance. The company's stock rose 13% on the news of the approval. MP Materials (MP) operates the Mountain Pass mine in California, the only integrated rare earth mining and processing facility in North America. The Pentagon committed $400 million to MP Materials to develop domestic rare earth magnet production, aiming to supply General Motors with non-Chinese magnets. This illustrates the push for localized REE supply chains. In the lithium sector, companies are working on diverse extraction methods. Atlas Lithium Corporation (ATLX) is advancing pre-assembly steps for its processing plant, indicating progress towards production. Standard Lithium Ltd. (SLI) is targeting a 2026 decision for its Arkansas lithium project, which focuses on extracting lithium from brine. Ioneer Ltd (IONR) is developing the Rhyolite Ridge Lithium-Boron Project in Nevada, a unique deposit that combines both critical minerals. NioCorp Developments Ltd. (NB) is focused on its Elk Creek project in Nebraska, which targets niobium, scandium, and titanium, with potential for rare earth byproducts. American Battery Technology Company (ABAT) received an export license for up to $100 million in recycled black mass critical minerals, highlighting the growing importance of battery recycling in the supply chain. USA Rare Earth, Inc. (USAR) is also active in the rare earth space, though specific project updates were not detailed in recent news. Lithium Americas Corp. (LAC) has been in the news for executive team changes and independent director appointments, as it navigates its project development.

American Lithium Minerals, Inc.

American Lithium Minerals, Inc. (AMLM) is an exploration-stage company, trading over the counter. The company focuses on lithium and boron properties located in Nevada. AMLM's primary asset is the Sarcobatus Lithium property, which comprises 1,780 acres of mining claims in Central Nevada. The company has stated intentions to expand its exploration and acquisition of mineral properties globally. AMLM also indicates a strategy to develop Real World Asset Tokens to provide capital for mining operations. The company incorporated in Nevada on March 10, 2005. It has acquired and divested cobalt, nickel, and graphite prospects in Central Nevada, and rare earth elements projects in Kingman, Arizona, and Southeast Illinois. The company's most recent substantive SEC filing, a Regulation A offering circular from February 2026, outlines its business plan and risks. The filing indicates AMLM has not generated significant revenues to date and its ability to do so depends on executing its business plan and expanding its client base. The public record does not yet establish a measured or indicated resource estimate for the Sarcobatus Lithium property. The Regulation A offering, qualified on February 4, 2026, covers up to 80,000,000 units, with an additional 120,000,000 shares issuable if attached warrants are fully exercised. Each unit includes one share of common stock and a warrant to purchase 1.5 shares of common stock, exercisable at $0.05 per share until December 31, 2028. The company announced on September 30, 2026, the completion of a PCAOB audit and its plan to uplist to OTCQB in the fourth quarter of 2026.

What to watch

Investors should monitor key operational milestones and regulatory decisions. For Critical Metals Corp. (CRML), the next step is the commencement of mine development at Tanbreez, following the Greenland government's approval. For Standard Lithium Ltd. (SLI), the targeted 2026 decision for its Arkansas lithium project will be a critical inflection point. Atlas Lithium Corporation (ATLX) is progressing with its processing plant pre-assembly, so updates on construction timelines and commissioning will be important. American Battery Technology Company (ABAT) has secured an export license for black mass, and further announcements on recycling volumes or new partnerships would be notable. American Lithium Minerals, Inc. (AMLM) has stated its intention to uplist to OTCQB in the fourth quarter of 2026. Any subsequent filings or announcements detailing exploration results or resource estimates for its Sarcobatus Lithium property would provide more clarity on its project development., { "label": "Concentrate Ore", "note": "Physical separation to increase REE content." }, { "label": "Separate Oxides", "note": "Complex chemical process to isolate individual rare earth oxides.", "metric": "95%+ Purity" }, { "label": "Metal & Magnets", "note": "Processing oxides into metals and high-performance magnets." }, { "label": "End-Use Products", "note": "Integration into EVs, wind turbines, electronics." } ], "highlight": 2, "highlight_note": "Separating individual rare earth oxides is the most technically challenging and capital-intensive step, historically dominated by China.", "footnote": "Source: Critical Metals Corp.
