Recent analyst upgrades for Albemarle and Lithium Americas highlight a tightening market, putting pressure on North American projects to deliver new supply of critical battery minerals.
On October 14, Mizuho Securities upgraded Albemarle (ALB) to Buy from Neutral. The firm cited surging energy storage demand as the primary driver. The next day, Canaccord Genuity upgraded Lithium Americas (LAC) to Speculative Buy from Hold. These moves by major analysts on two of the largest players in the lithium space signal a renewed bullishness on the sector's long-term fundamentals.
This optimism comes despite recent price volatility in lithium markets. The upgrades suggest that the underlying demand for lithium, particularly from the energy storage sector, is now seen as a stronger force than short-term supply fluctuations. The market is shifting its focus from current spot prices to the long-term supply pipeline, especially in North America.
The North American Supply Chain Bottleneck
Extracting lithium from the ground is only the first step. The real bottleneck in the North American battery supply chain sits in processing. Lithium must be refined into battery-grade chemicals, typically lithium hydroxide or lithium carbonate, to be useful in electric vehicle batteries. This refining process is complex, capital-intensive, and requires significant technical expertise. Most global refining capacity currently resides in China, creating a geopolitical and logistical vulnerability for North American battery manufacturers. Building new, environmentally compliant refining facilities in the US or Canada takes years and billions of dollars. Permitting, engineering, and construction timelines are long. The challenge is not just finding lithium deposits, but developing the integrated supply chain from mine to battery cell, which includes the chemical processing required to meet stringent battery specifications. This is where the value accrues and where the current supply chain is weakest in North America.

Operators Building North American Capacity
Several companies are working to establish or expand critical mineral production within North America, addressing different parts of the supply chain.
Lithium extraction and processing:
Ioneer Ltd (IONR), trading at $2.69, is developing the Rhyolite Ridge lithium-boron project in Nevada. This project is notable for its co-production of lithium carbonate and boric acid from a single ore body. The company received a conditional commitment for a loan from the US Department of Energy in January 2023, signaling federal support for domestic critical mineral production. Standard Lithium Ltd. (SLI), with shares at $1.39, focuses on commercializing lithium extraction from brine resources in Arkansas. Their flagship Lanxess project aims to produce battery-grade lithium carbonate using direct lithium extraction (DLE) technology. Atlas Lithium Corporation (ATLX), trading at $2.30, is advancing its Minas Gerais lithium project in Brazil, with pre-assembly steps for its processing plant underway as of October 6. While not in North America, its progress contributes to the broader Western supply chain. American Battery Technology Company (ABAT), priced at $1.57, is developing a diversified approach, including lithium-ion battery recycling and primary lithium extraction from Nevada claystone resources. Their focus on both new extraction and circular economy solutions addresses multiple facets of supply.
Rare earths and other critical minerals:
MP Materials (MP) operates the Mountain Pass rare earth mine in California, the only integrated rare earth mining and processing site in North America. The company is working to restore full rare earth separation capabilities at the site, reducing reliance on offshore processing. Critical Metals Corp. (CRML), trading at $6.95, is focused on the Tanbreez rare earth project in Greenland. The company secured Tanbreez approval in early October, moving that project forward. USA Rare Earth, Inc. (USAR), at $11.09, is developing the Round Top heavy rare earth and critical minerals project in Texas. This project aims to produce a wide range of critical minerals, including lithium, uranium, and beryllium, alongside rare earths. NioCorp Developments Ltd. (NB), priced at $3.26, is developing the Elk Creek project in Nebraska, which aims to produce niobium, scandium, and titanium, with potential for rare earth element production. These projects are crucial for diversifying the supply of critical minerals beyond lithium, which are also essential for advanced technologies and defense.
American Lithium Minerals, Inc.
American Lithium Minerals, Inc. (AMLM), trading over the counter at $0.064, is an exploration stage company incorporated in Nevada in 2005. The company's stated focus is lithium and boron properties in Nevada, with an intention to expand exploration and acquisition worldwide. Its current primary project is the Sarcobatus Lithium property, comprising 1,780 acres of mining claims in Central Nevada. The company has also acquired and divested cobalt, nickel, and graphite prospects in Central Nevada, and rare earth elements projects in Kingman, Arizona and Southeast Illinois.
AMLM is pre-revenue. It qualified a Regulation A offering on Form 1-A on February 4, 2026, covering up to 80,000,000 units. Each unit includes one share of common stock and a warrant to purchase 1.5 shares of common stock, exercisable at $0.05 per share until December 31, 2028. If all warrants are exercised in full, up to 120,000,000 additional shares could be issued. The company announced the appointment of independent directors and the launch of a shareholder ambassador program on October 15. On October 7, AMLM announced the conversion of a note from Worldwide Diversified Holdings, Inc. into common shares, which the company stated strengthens its balance sheet. The public record does not yet establish a measured or indicated resource for the Sarcobatus project. AMLM also states it is developing the use of Real World Asset Tokens to provide capital for mining, aiming to create an interoperable ecosystem for asset acquisition, tokenization, and trading.
What to watch
Several key developments will shape the trajectory of North American critical minerals. For Ioneer (IONR), watch for updates on the Rhyolite Ridge project's definitive feasibility study and progress towards a final investment decision. Standard Lithium (SLI) investors should monitor pilot plant results and further agreements for its DLE technology in Arkansas. Atlas Lithium (ATLX) will likely provide updates on the installation and commissioning of its processing plant in Brazil. For American Battery Technology Company (ABAT), look for news on the permitting and development of its Nevada claystone project and progress on its battery recycling facility.
In the rare earths space, MP Materials (MP) will continue to report on the ramp-up of its rare earth separation capabilities at Mountain Pass. Critical Metals Corp. (CRML) will need to provide details on the development timeline and financing for the Tanbreez project in Greenland. USA Rare Earth (USAR) investors should watch for updates on the Round Top project's permitting and any potential government funding announcements. NioCorp Developments (NB) will be reporting on progress at its Elk Creek project, particularly regarding financing and construction timelines. For American Lithium Minerals (AMLM), watch for further details on exploration results from its Sarcobatus project in Central Nevada and any updates on its Real World Asset Token initiatives.,
