New Greenland Mine Unlocks Non-Chinese Rare Earths
Tanbreez approval offers alternative supply for key magnet metals.
Critical Metals Corp. (CRML) announced on October 5th, 2026, that it received formal Greenland Government mining approvals for the Tanbreez Mine. This permit is valid through 2050, a long runway for development and operations. The news sent CRML shares up 13% to $6.54, reflecting the market's recognition of a significant development in critical mineral sourcing. This approval opens a new, non-Chinese pathway for rare earth elements, a sector long dominated by a single geopolitical actor.

The Mechanism of Rare Earth Supply

Rare earth elements are 17 chemically similar metallic elements crucial for magnets in electric vehicles, wind turbines, and advanced electronics. The challenge in rare earth supply is not scarcity, but separation. These elements occur together in mineral deposits. Extracting them requires complex, energy-intensive chemical processes. Crushing the ore is the first step. Then, a series of flotation, magnetic separation, and gravity separation steps concentrate the rare earth minerals. The real bottleneck is the solvent extraction, where different rare earth oxides are separated from each other in a series of agitated tanks. This process demands specialized reagents and precise control. The capital expenditure for a full separation plant is substantial, and the operational expertise is highly concentrated. Failure at this stage means a mixed rare earth concentrate, which has significantly less value than individual separated oxides. Establishing new, independent separation capacity outside of existing hubs directly addresses a major supply chain vulnerability.

Companies Working in Critical Minerals

The critical minerals landscape includes established producers, developers, and explorers, each tackling different parts of the supply chain. Albemarle Corporation (ALB) and Lithium Americas Corp. (LAC) are major players in the lithium carbonate and hydroxide market, primarily focused on brines and hard rock deposits. Albemarle, despite recent market fluctuations, remains a dominant force in global lithium production. Lithium Americas is advancing its Thacker Pass project in Nevada, a significant domestic lithium resource. Standard Lithium Ltd. (SLI) is focused on direct lithium extraction (DLE) from brine resources in Arkansas, aiming for a more environmentally friendly and efficient production method. In the rare earth sector, MP Materials (MP) operates the Mountain Pass mine in California, the only integrated rare earth mining and processing site in North America. MP Materials produces rare earth concentrate and is working to expand its downstream processing capabilities to include separated rare earth oxides. USA Rare Earth, Inc. (USAR), at $11.28, is developing the Round Top project in Texas, which aims to produce a wide range of critical minerals including rare earths and lithium. NioCorp Developments Ltd. (NB), at $3.34, is advancing its Elk Creek project in Nebraska, which targets niobium, scandium, and titanium, with potential for rare earth co-products. Ioneer Ltd (IONR), at $2.89, is developing the Rhyolite Ridge project in Nevada, a significant lithium-boron deposit. Atlas Lithium Corporation (ATLX), at $2.07, is developing its hard rock lithium projects in Brazil. American Battery Technology Company (ABAT), trading at $1.75, is focused on lithium-ion battery recycling and primary lithium hydroxide manufacturing. Critical Metals Corp. (CRML), now at $6.54, with its Tanbreez project, is poised to add a new source of heavy rare earth elements, particularly dysprosium and terbium, which are vital for high-strength magnets.

American Lithium Minerals, Inc.

American Lithium Minerals, Inc. (AMLM) trades over the counter at $0.0678 and is an exploration stage company. It is pre-revenue. AMLM's stated focus is lithium and boron properties in Nevada. The company's most recent substantive filing, a Regulation A offering on Form 1-A, was qualified by the SEC on February 4th, 2026. This offering covers up to 80,000,000 units, with up to 120,000,000 shares issuable if attached warrants are fully exercised. The company's current project is the Sarcobatus Lithium property, comprising 1,780 acres of mining claims in Central Nevada. AMLM was incorporated in Nevada on March 10th, 2005. Its activities since 2009 have focused on lithium exploration in the Sarcobatus area. The company has also acquired and divested cobalt, nickel, and graphite prospects in Central Nevada, and rare earth elements projects in Kingman, Arizona, and Southeast Illinois. AMLM states it intends to expand its exploration and acquisition for mineral properties worldwide. It is also developing the use of Real World Asset Tokens to provide capital for mining. The public record does not yet establish a proven or probable reserve estimate for the Sarcobatus property. The company's long-term vision, as stated in filings, is to create an interoperable ecosystem where every asset, from a Nevada gold vein to a lithium deposit, can be securely acquired, transparently tokenized, and efficiently traded.

What to Watch

The Greenland Government mining approvals for Critical Metals Corp.'s Tanbreez Mine are a concrete step towards diversifying the global rare earth supply chain. Watch for CRML's next steps on project financing and construction timelines. Specifically, look for announcements regarding engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contracts, and any binding offtake agreements for its rare earth products. For Ioneer Ltd (IONR), the ongoing progress at the Rhyolite Ridge lithium-boron project in Nevada, particularly regarding permitting and any further federal funding decisions, will be important. Standard Lithium (SLI) investors should track the development of its DLE technology and any commercial scale-up announcements. For American Lithium Minerals (AMLM), look for updates on exploration results from its Sarcobatus Lithium property in Nevada, specifically drilling programs and resource delineation efforts. For MP Materials (MP), the expansion of its downstream processing capabilities at Mountain Pass to produce separated rare earth oxides will be a key indicator of its progress towards an integrated domestic supply chain., { "label": "Concentrate", "note": "Physical separation to increase rare earth content." }, { "label": "Separate Oxides", "note": "Chemical solvent extraction to isolate individual rare earth oxides.", "metric": "Dysprosium" }, { "label": "Metal & Alloy", "note": "Convert oxides to pure metal, then alloy for magnets." }, { "label": "Finished Magnet", "note": "Fabricate high-strength magnets for EV motors, wind turbines." } ], "highlight": 2, "highlight_note": "Separating specific rare earth oxides is the most complex, capital-intensive, and bottlenecked stage.", "footnote": "Source: Critical Metals Corp. 2026-10-05 announcement; PubCo Insight analysis" }
