Spodumene Processing: The Thermal Conversion Bottleneck
High-temperature roasting is key to unlocking lithium from hard rock.
On October 27, Critical Metals Corp. (CRML) announced the finalization of its acquisition of European Lithium, securing court and shareholder approvals for the deal. This move consolidates the Wolfsberg spodumene project in Austria under the Critical Metals banner. The transaction, effective October 27, shifts a significant European lithium asset into a larger, publicly traded entity, reshaping the landscape for regional battery metal supply.

The Mechanism of Spodumene Processing

Spodumene is a lithium-bearing mineral, a pyroxene, found in pegmatite formations. It is the most common hard-rock source for lithium extraction. Extracting lithium from spodumene involves several critical steps. First, the ore is crushed and then concentrated, typically through dense media separation or flotation, to produce a spodumene concentrate. This concentrate, often graded at 6% lithium oxide (Li2O), is then roasted at high temperatures, usually between 1000°C and 1100°C, to convert the alpha-spodumene into beta-spodumene. This thermal conversion is crucial because alpha-spodumene is chemically inert, while beta-spodumene is amenable to acid leaching. The roasted material is then leached with sulfuric acid, dissolving the lithium into a solution. Impurities are removed, and the lithium is precipitated out, often as lithium carbonate or lithium hydroxide, which are the primary forms used in battery manufacturing. The bottleneck in this process often lies in securing consistent, high-grade spodumene feed and optimizing the roasting and leaching stages to maximize recovery and minimize energy consumption. High energy costs and the need for specialized chemical processing facilities are significant hurdles.

Companies Operating in the Small and Micro-Cap Lithium and Critical Minerals Space

The sector for small and micro-cap lithium and critical minerals companies is characterized by a range of approaches, from hard-rock mining to brine extraction and recycling. Atlas Lithium Corporation (ATLX) holds lithium properties in Brazil, focusing on hard-rock spodumene. Their strategy involves developing projects to feed the growing demand for lithium chemicals. Standard Lithium Ltd. (SLI) is pursuing lithium extraction from brine resources, particularly in Arkansas and Texas. SLI recently filed a positive Preliminary Economic Assessment for its Franklin Project in East Texas, targeting 70,000 tonnes per year. This approach leverages existing infrastructure and aims for a lower environmental footprint than traditional mining. ioneer Ltd (IONR) is developing the Rhyolite Ridge Lithium-Boron Project in Nevada. This project is unique due to its co-production of lithium carbonate and boric acid from a single ore body, offering diversification beyond just lithium. NioCorp Developments Ltd. (NB) is focused on the Elk Creek Critical Minerals Project in Nebraska, aiming to produce niobium, scandium, and titanium, with potential for rare earth elements. Their focus is on high-value, niche critical minerals essential for advanced technologies. American Battery Technology Company (ABAT) is addressing the battery supply chain from a different angle, focusing on battery recycling and the domestic production of battery metals in Nevada. Their model aims to create a circular economy for lithium-ion batteries, reducing reliance on new mining. USA Rare Earth, Inc. (USAR) is developing the Round Top heavy rare earth and critical minerals project in Texas, which aims to produce a wide range of rare earth elements, lithium, and other high-tech metals. Critical Metals Corp. (CRML), now with the European Lithium acquisition, controls the Wolfsberg lithium project in Austria. This project is a hard-rock spodumene deposit, positioning CRML as a potential supplier of lithium concentrate to the European battery value chain. The consolidation under CRML brings a more substantial resource base and development pipeline into a single entity, potentially streamlining financing and development efforts for Wolfsberg.

American Lithium Minerals, Inc.

American Lithium Minerals, Inc. (AMLM) operates as an exploration-stage company, focusing on lithium and boron properties within Nevada. The company trades over the counter and filed a Regulation A offering on Form 1-A on February 4, 2026. This offering covers up to 80,000,000 units, with an additional 120,000,000 shares issuable if all attached warrants are exercised. The primary asset for AMLM is the Sarcobatus Lithium property, located in Central Nevada. This property consists of 1,780 acres of mining claims. The company's filings indicate a long-term vision to expand its exploration and acquisition activities globally, beyond its current Nevada focus. AMLM also states an interest in developing Real World Asset Tokens as a mechanism for capital acquisition for mining projects. The public record does not yet establish a definitive resource estimate or preliminary economic assessment for the Sarcobatus property. AMLM's historical activities, since its incorporation in Nevada in 2005, have involved acquiring mineral rights and exploring for various minerals, including past involvement with cobalt, nickel, graphite, and rare earth elements in Nevada, Arizona, and Illinois. The current emphasis is on lithium exploration in Central Nevada. The company's plan involves exploring for lithium and potentially boron, with an eye toward eventually producing a lithium compound or rare earth concentrate if a mine is brought into production.

What to watch

Investors should monitor several specific developments. For Critical Metals Corp. (CRML), the focus will be on the integration of the Wolfsberg project and any updated timelines or capital expenditure plans for its development. Watch for announcements regarding permitting progress, detailed engineering studies, and potential offtake agreements for Wolfsberg's output. For Standard Lithium (SLI), the next steps for the Franklin Project in East Texas, following the recent PEA filing, will be crucial. This includes any moves towards a definitive feasibility study or pilot plant operations. Ioneer (IONR) will likely provide updates on its Rhyolite Ridge project, particularly concerning permitting and financing for its unique lithium-boron co-production. For American Lithium Minerals (AMLM), watch for any announcements regarding exploration results from the Sarcobatus property, including drilling programs or initial resource estimates, as well as any progress on their Real World Asset Token initiatives. Across the sector, observe broader trends in lithium and critical mineral pricing, as well as any new government incentives or regulations impacting domestic supply chains, which could influence project viability and development pace for all these operators., { "label": "Concentration", "note": "Crushing, grinding, and flotation to 6% Li2O concentrate.", "metric": "6% Li2O" }, { "label": "Alpha-Beta Roast", "note": "High-temp conversion of inert alpha-spodumene to reactive beta-spodumene.", "metric": "1000-1100°C" }, { "label": "Acid Leach", "note": "Dissolving lithium into solution with sulfuric acid." }, { "label": "Lithium Product", "note": "Precipitation into battery-grade lithium carbonate or hydroxide." } ], "highlight": 2, "highlight_note": "Energy-intensive roasting is critical; efficiency and cost control determine project viability.", "footnote": "Based on standard spodumene processing, PubCo Insight analysis." }
