Canaccord Genuity's upgrade of Lithium Americas highlights a shift in how analysts view the commercialization timelines and financing structures of domestic battery mineral projects.
On October 15, 2026, Canaccord Genuity upgraded Lithium Americas Corp. (LAC) to Speculative Buy from Hold. This move, which saw LAC shares rise, signals a broader re-evaluation by Wall Street of North American lithium developers. These companies are pushing projects critical for domestic battery supply chains. Investors holding positions in larger sector names are now tracking these rating shifts, looking for signs that commercialization and financing are firming up across the industry.
Direct Lithium Extraction: The Mechanism
The core challenge in North American lithium production often lies in the source material. Many prospective deposits are not hard rock spodumene, but rather brines or clays. Extracting lithium from these sources requires Direct Lithium Extraction, or DLE. Traditional brine operations evaporate vast quantities of water over months or years, concentrating lithium salts. DLE technologies aim to bypass this by selectively removing lithium ions from the brine or leachate using sorbents, ion-exchange resins, or solvent extraction. This process can significantly reduce the land footprint and evaporation time. It also often uses less freshwater than hard rock mining, which is a major advantage in arid regions like Nevada. For DLE to be commercially viable, the technology must achieve high lithium recovery rates and reject impurities like magnesium and calcium efficiently. The process also needs to be cost-effective at scale, consuming minimal reagents and energy. Proving out DLE technology at pilot scale, then scaling it to commercial production, is the critical hurdle. A project fails if the DLE process cannot consistently produce battery-grade lithium carbonate or hydroxide at a competitive cost.

Companies Building North American Capacity
Several operators are advancing projects across the North American critical minerals landscape, each with distinct approaches. In lithium, Standard Lithium Ltd. (SLI), trading at $1.50, recently filed a positive Preliminary Economic Assessment for its Franklin Project in East Texas. This project targets 70,000 tonnes per year of lithium carbonate equivalent, focusing on high-grade brine resources. Atlas Lithium Corporation (ATLX), priced at $2.05, is developing its lithium assets in Brazil, aiming to supply the North American market. Ioneer Ltd (IONR), at $2.81, is focused on its Rhyolite Ridge lithium-boron project in Nevada. This project is notable for its co-production of both critical minerals.
On the rare earth side, MP Materials (MP) operates the Mountain Pass mine in California, the only integrated rare earth mining and processing site in North America. USA Rare Earth, Inc. (USAR), trading at $10.06, is developing its Round Top heavy rare earth and critical minerals project in Texas. Critical Metals Corp. (CRML), at $6.40, is engaged in exploration for various critical metals, including rare earths, with a focus on projects in Europe and Greenland. NioCorp Developments Ltd. (NB), priced at $3.03, is developing its Elk Creek project in Nebraska, which targets niobium, scandium, and titanium, with potential for rare earth byproducts. American Battery Technology Company (ABAT), at $1.47, is focused on lithium-ion battery recycling and the development of proprietary DLE technologies for extracting lithium from Nevada claystone resources.
American Lithium Minerals, Inc.
American Lithium Minerals, Inc. (AMLM), trading over the counter at $0.0603, is an exploration stage company. It operates in Nevada, focusing on lithium and boron properties. The company was incorporated in Nevada in March 2005. Its primary asset is the Sarcobatus Lithium property, which comprises 1,780 acres of mining claims in Central Nevada. AMLM's stated business plan involves expanding its exploration and acquisition of mineral properties globally. The company also states an intention to develop Real World Asset Tokens to fund mining operations.
AMLM is a pre-revenue company. Its activities since 2009 have centered on lithium exploration at the Sarcobatus project. The company has also acquired and divested cobalt, nickel, and graphite prospects in Central Nevada, and rare earth element projects in Kingman, Arizona, and Southeast Illinois. The public record does not yet establish a measured or indicated resource for the Sarcobatus project. In February 2026, the SEC qualified a Regulation A offering on Form 1-A. This offering covered up to 80,000,000 units, with an additional 120,000,000 shares potentially issuable if attached warrants are fully exercised. Each unit includes one share of common stock and a warrant to purchase 1.5 shares of common stock at an exercise price of $0.05 per share, expiring December 31, 2028. The minimum purchase requirement for investors in this offering is $1,000, though the company can waive this.
What to watch
Investors should watch for specific project milestones. For Standard Lithium (SLI), the next step would be an updated technical report or a Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) for the Franklin Project, building on the recent Preliminary Economic Assessment. For Ioneer (IONR), progress on permitting and financing for the Rhyolite Ridge project, particularly any updates on Department of Energy loan guarantees or strategic partnerships, will be key. In the rare earth space, MP Materials (MP) continues to work on its downstream processing capabilities at Mountain Pass; any announcements regarding the commissioning or ramp-up of these facilities will be significant. USA Rare Earth (USAR) shareholders should monitor news on government funding milestones for its Round Top project. For American Lithium Minerals (AMLM), the focus remains on exploration results from the Sarcobatus property and any updates on the use of proceeds from its Regulation A offering. The market will also track any further analyst upgrades or downgrades for major players like Lithium Americas (LAC) and Albemarle (ALB), as these signal shifts in institutional confidence regarding commercialization timelines and capital expenditure profiles.,
