Deutsche Bank adjusted its price target for Lithium Americas (LAC) to $4.20 from $5.10 on August 17th. This followed the company's Q2 net loss narrowing, reported on August 13th, and a $175 million financing deal for Thacker Pass announced on August 6th. The capital injection for Thacker Pass, a significant claystone lithium project in Nevada, underscores the high cost and strategic necessity of bringing new lithium supply online in North America. This isn't just about one project's valuation; it reflects a broader, accelerating push to de-risk battery supply chains by establishing domestic sources of critical minerals. The drive for North American supply security extends beyond lithium. Boron, rare earth elements, and other battery metals face similar pressures. Geopolitical tensions and the concentration of processing capacity in specific regions have exposed vulnerabilities. This environment creates opportunities for smaller players with domestic assets, particularly those advancing projects from exploration to development.

The Hard Work of Domestic Mineral Processing

Extracting critical minerals is only the first step. The real bottleneck, and the source of significant value, often lies in processing. For lithium, this means converting raw ore or brine into battery-grade lithium carbonate or hydroxide. For rare earths, it means separating individual rare earth oxides, a complex hydrometallurgical process. Rare earth elements occur together in mineral deposits, chemically similar enough to be difficult to separate but distinct enough to have different industrial uses. The process involves multiple stages of solvent extraction, where specific organic solvents selectively bond with different rare earth ions, allowing them to be separated in a series of tanks. Each element requires precise chemical conditions, making the entire operation capital-intensive and technically challenging. This processing gap is why many North American mining projects, even with rich deposits, face long development timelines and substantial capital requirements. Building a domestic processing facility means replicating infrastructure and expertise that has historically been concentrated overseas. Companies that can demonstrate a viable, scalable processing solution for their specific ore body, whether it's claystone lithium or hard rock rare earths, unlock significant value.

Operators in the North American Critical Minerals Space

The landscape of North American critical minerals is diverse, with companies tackling different elements and stages of development. In lithium, Standard Lithium (SLI) recently demonstrated successful use of its South West Arkansas lithium carbonate in North American LFP battery cells on August 13th, a key step in validating its direct lithium extraction (DLE) technology. This DLE approach aims to reduce the environmental footprint and accelerate production compared to traditional evaporation ponds. Atlas Lithium Corporation (ATLX) is advancing its hard rock lithium projects in Brazil, a region gaining attention for its potential to feed North American markets. In the rare earth sector, MP Materials (MP) operates the Mountain Pass mine in California, the only integrated rare earth mining and processing site in North America. The company reported a 68% surge in revenues in the first half of 2026, according to a Zacks report on August 14th, and signed a secret aerospace deal on August 13th. NioCorp Developments Ltd. (NB) is focused on its Elk Creek project in Nebraska, aiming to produce niobium, scandium, and titanium, alongside rare earth elements. USA Rare Earth, Inc. (USAR), which saw its stock gain 7% on August 14th, is developing the Round Top heavy rare earth and critical minerals project in Texas. Critical Metals Corp. (CRML) is making progress at its Greenland rare earth project, as highlighted by CEO Tony Sage on August 17th. Ioneer Ltd (IONR) is developing its Rhyolite Ridge lithium-boron project in Nevada, a dual-commodity asset that could supply both battery-grade lithium and boron for various industrial applications. American Battery Technology Company (ABAT) works on lithium-ion battery recycling and primary mineral extraction, aiming to create a closed-loop domestic supply chain for battery metals. Albemarle (ALB), a global lithium leader, continues to be a bellwether for the sector. While its stock saw a slide of 28% in three months, as noted by Zacks on August 14th, analysts like RBC Capital and Scotiabank adjusted price targets on August 10th, maintaining outperform ratings due to Albemarle's low-cost assets and brownfield opportunities. Sociedad Quimica y Minera (SQM), another major global lithium producer, recently broke out above its 50-day moving average on August 17th, indicating market momentum.

American Lithium Minerals, Inc. (AMLM) is an exploration stage company, pre-revenue, focused on lithium and boron properties in Nevada. The company was incorporated in Nevada on March 10, 2005. Its primary project is the Sarcobatus Lithium property, comprising 1,780 acres of mining claims in Central Nevada. AMLM’s activities since 2009 have centered on lithium exploration in this region. The company has also acquired and divested cobalt, nickel, and graphite prospects in Central Nevada, and rare earth elements projects in Kingman, Arizona and Southeast Illinois. AMLM’s stated strategy includes expanding its exploration and acquisition for mineral properties worldwide. It is also developing the use of Real World Asset Tokens to provide capital for mining. On February 4, 2026, the SEC qualified a Regulation A offering on Form 1-A, covering up to 80,000,000 units. Each unit includes one share of common stock and one warrant to purchase 1.5 shares of common stock, exercisable at $0.05 per share until December 31, 2028. This offering could lead to the issuance of up to 120,000,000 shares if all warrants are exercised. The company does not own any real property such as land or buildings. The public record does not yet establish a measured or indicated resource for the Sarcobatus project. AMLM intends to create an interoperable ecosystem where assets, from gold veins to lithium deposits, can be tokenized and traded.

Watch for further financing announcements from companies like Lithium Americas as they push projects like Thacker Pass towards production. Permitting progress for new mines and processing facilities, particularly in the US and Canada, will be critical. The timeline for the completion of environmental impact assessments and the issuance of key permits will dictate project schedules. Offtake agreements, like the one Stardust Power announced on August 5th, will signal market confidence and provide financing certainty for emerging producers. Finally, look for continued advancements in processing technologies, especially for complex ores like rare earth clays and lithium claystones.
