East Texas Brine: A New Domestic Lithium Source
Direct lithium extraction from deep brines offers a path to secure supply.
Standard Lithium (SLI) filed a positive Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) for its Franklin Project in East Texas on October 20, 2026. The report outlines a plan for 70,000 tonnes per year of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) production. This development brings a new, large-scale brine project into sharper focus, located in a region not traditionally associated with lithium. The Franklin Project's scale, if realized, would significantly alter the domestic lithium landscape. It underscores the accelerating push to establish secure, North American supply chains for battery materials. The focus now shifts to how direct lithium extraction (DLE) technologies will perform at commercial scale in this specific geological context.

The Mechanism of Brine Extraction

Direct lithium extraction from brines involves selectively removing lithium ions from underground saline water. This process differs fundamentally from hard rock mining, which crushes ore and uses chemical reagents to extract lithium. In brine operations, wells pump the lithium-rich solution from aquifers. The DLE technology then separates the lithium from other dissolved minerals like sodium, potassium, and magnesium. The remaining brine is then reinjected into the ground. This reinjection is critical for environmental permitting and maintaining aquifer pressure. The key challenge lies in the selectivity and efficiency of the DLE process. It must capture a high percentage of lithium while minimizing energy consumption and the use of expensive reagents. The brine chemistry itself, including the concentration of lithium and the presence of impurities, dictates the specific DLE technology required. A high lithium-to-magnesium ratio, for instance, simplifies extraction. The Franklin Project's reported high-grade brine suggests a more favorable starting point for DLE.

Companies Pursuing Brine and Critical Minerals

Several companies are actively developing projects across the critical minerals spectrum, from lithium brines to rare earths. Standard Lithium (SLI) is advancing its brine projects in Arkansas and now East Texas. The Franklin Project PEA details a substantial resource in the Smackover Formation, a known oil and gas reservoir. This geological setting presents both opportunities, due to existing infrastructure, and challenges, given the complex hydrogeology. In Nevada, ioneer Ltd (IONR) is focused on its Rhyolite Ridge project, a lithium-boron deposit. This co-production model aims to leverage both minerals. Boron is essential for high-strength glass, ceramics, and some advanced battery chemistries. Atlas Lithium Corporation (ATLX) holds lithium properties in Brazil, primarily hard rock pegmatite deposits, a different geological approach. NioCorp Developments Ltd. (NB) is working on its Elk Creek project in Nebraska, targeting niobium, scandium, and titanium. These are critical for high-strength alloys and advanced materials. Critical Metals Corp. (CRML) is also involved in various critical mineral projects, with recent news mentioning its interest in rare earths. USA Rare Earth, Inc. (USAR) is focused on its Round Top rare earth and critical minerals project in Texas. This project aims to establish a domestic supply chain for heavy rare earth elements, which are vital for electric vehicle motors and wind turbines. Separating rare earth oxides is difficult because these elements have very similar chemical properties. They require complex solvent extraction circuits, often with hundreds of stages, to achieve the high purity levels needed for magnets and other advanced applications. American Battery Technology Company (ABAT) is developing lithium-ion battery recycling technologies and primary lithium production from Nevada claystone resources. Their approach seeks to create a circular economy for battery materials.

American Lithium Minerals, Inc.

American Lithium Minerals, Inc. (AMLM) trades over the counter and is an exploration stage company. It is pre-revenue. The company states its focus is on lithium and boron properties in Nevada. AMLM's current project is the Sarcobatus Lithium property, comprising 1,780 acres of mining claims in Central Nevada. The company was incorporated in Nevada in 2005. Its activities since 2009 have focused on lithium exploration in this Central Nevada region. AMLM has also acquired and divested cobalt, nickel, and graphite prospects in Central Nevada, and rare earth elements projects in Kingman, Arizona, and Southeast Illinois. The public record does not yet establish a measured or indicated resource for the Sarcobatus property. AMLM intends to expand its exploration and acquisition for mineral properties worldwide. The company also states it is developing the use of Real World Asset Tokens to provide capital for mining, aiming to create an ecosystem for acquiring, tokenizing, and trading mining assets. A Regulation A offering on Form 1-A was qualified by the SEC on February 4, 2026, covering up to 80,000,000 units. Each unit includes one share of common stock and one warrant to purchase 1.5 shares of common stock. The warrants are exercisable at $0.05 per share until December 31, 2028. The total offering amount, including shares from warrant exercise, could reach $20,000,000. The minimum purchase requirement for investors is $1,000, though the company can waive this on a case-by-case basis.

What to watch

Investors should monitor Standard Lithium's (SLI) progress on the Franklin Project, specifically any updates on pilot plant operations or detailed engineering studies that follow the PEA. The next major milestone would be a Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) or Feasibility Study (FS), which would provide more detailed economic and technical data. For ioneer Ltd (IONR), watch for advancements in its permitting process for Rhyolite Ridge, particularly regarding environmental impact assessments. NioCorp Developments Ltd. (NB) will need to demonstrate progress in securing financing and advancing construction plans for its Elk Creek project. For American Lithium Minerals, Inc. (AMLM), the key watch item is any announcement of drilling results or the establishment of a formal resource estimate for its Sarcobatus property. For all brine operators, the efficiency and scalability of their chosen DLE technology will remain a critical factor., { "label": "Brine Pumping", "note": "Wells extract brine from underground reservoirs." }, { "label": "Direct Lithium Extraction", "note": "DLE technology selectively removes lithium ions.", "metric": "70,000 tpy LCE" }, { "label": "Lithium Compound", "note": "Concentrated lithium carbonate or hydroxide produced." }, { "label": "Brine Reinjection", "note": "Depleted brine returned to the aquifer." } ], "highlight": 2, "highlight_note": "DLE efficiency and cost at scale determine project viability and environmental footprint.", "footnote": "Source: Standard Lithium Franklin Project PEA, Oct 20, 2026" }
