A new defense contract for gadolinium highlights a strategic shift for MP Materials, pointing to broader government and aerospace demand for critical rare earths beyond the electric vehicle market.
MP Materials, trading as MP, announced a new defense deal for gadolinium on August 25, 2026. This contract marks a significant expansion beyond the company's established focus on electric vehicle supply chains. Analysts on August 24, 2026, suggested this aerospace agreement is likely the first of several, indicating a broader push by the U.S. government and defense sector to secure domestic rare earth supplies. The move signals a diversification of revenue streams for rare earth producers and a growing recognition of these materials' strategic importance across multiple industries.
The Mechanism of Rare Earth Separation
Rare earth elements, or REEs, are a group of 17 chemically similar metallic elements critical to modern technology. They are often found together in the same ore bodies, making their separation a complex and energy-intensive process. The challenge lies in their similar chemical properties, which means standard metallurgical techniques are insufficient. Instead, producers rely on solvent extraction. This process involves dissolving the crushed ore in acid, then repeatedly mixing the resulting solution with an organic solvent. Each rare earth element has a slightly different affinity for the solvent versus the aqueous solution. By carefully controlling pH and solvent composition across hundreds, sometimes thousands, of stages, individual rare earth oxides can be progressively separated and purified. This multi-stage liquid-liquid extraction is the bottleneck. It requires significant capital investment in specialized facilities and precise chemical engineering to achieve the high purity levels demanded by end-users in electronics, defense, and advanced manufacturing. Without efficient, large-scale separation capabilities, even abundant rare earth deposits remain economically unviable.

Companies Working in This Part of the Sector
Several companies are navigating the complex landscape of critical minerals, from early-stage exploration to advanced processing. MP Materials (MP) operates the Mountain Pass mine in California, the only integrated rare earth mining and processing facility in North America. The company has historically focused on neodymium and praseodymium, key components for permanent magnets used in EVs and wind turbines. Its recent defense contract for gadolinium, a rare earth used in medical imaging, nuclear reactors, and defense applications, marks a deliberate expansion of its product portfolio and customer base.
In the lithium space, Albemarle (ALB) and Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile (SQM) are major global producers, primarily from brine operations in South America. SQM reported strong Q2 2026 earnings, with lithium growth noted on August 20, 2026. Albemarle also saw a profit rebound and a higher 2026 outlook, as reported on August 18, 2026. Lithium Americas Corp. (LAC) is developing the Thacker Pass project in Nevada, a significant claystone lithium deposit. The company received a rating upgrade to Buy on August 19, 2026. Atlas Lithium Corporation (ATLX) is advancing its hard-rock lithium project in Brazil.
Other players are tackling different parts of the critical minerals supply chain. NioCorp Developments Ltd. (NB) is focused on its Elk Creek project in Nebraska, which aims to produce niobium, scandium, and titanium. Standard Lithium Ltd. (SLI) is working on direct lithium extraction (DLE) technologies for brine resources in Arkansas. Ioneer Ltd (IONR) is developing the Rhyolite Ridge lithium-boron project in Nevada. Critical Metals Corp. (CRML) is in the process of acquiring European Lithium, with a September court date set for the $835 million merger deal, as reported on August 28, 2026. Critical Metals also provided an update on its Greenland Rare Earth Project on August 17, 2026. American Battery Technology Company (ABAT) announced its highest-ever gross profit in Q4 FY2026 and the reinstatement of a $57 million Department of Energy grant on August 20, 2026, focusing on lithium-ion battery recycling and primary mineral extraction. USA Rare Earth, Inc. (USAR) is developing the Round Top heavy rare earth and critical minerals project in Texas.
American Lithium Minerals, Inc.
American Lithium Minerals, Inc. (AMLM) is an exploration stage company, pre-revenue, trading over the counter. The company's stated focus is lithium and boron properties in Nevada. AMLM was incorporated in Nevada on March 10, 2005. Its current primary project is the Sarcobatus Lithium property, comprising 1,780 acres of mining claims in Central Nevada. The company's activities since 2009 have centered on lithium exploration in this region. The public record does not yet establish a measured or indicated resource for the Sarcobatus project.
AMLM has also acquired and divested cobalt, nickel, and graphite prospects in Central Nevada, and rare earth elements projects in Kingman, Arizona, and Southeast Illinois. Beyond mineral exploration, American Lithium Minerals states an intent to expand its exploration and acquisition for mineral properties worldwide and is developing the use of Real World Asset Tokens to provide capital for mining. This blockchain strategy aims to create an interoperable ecosystem for asset acquisition, transparent tokenization, and efficient trading of mining assets. The company qualified a Regulation A offering on Form 1-A on February 4, 2026, covering up to 80,000,000 units, with up to 120,000,000 shares issuable if the attached warrants are fully exercised. Each unit includes one share of common stock and a warrant to purchase 1.5 shares of common stock at $0.05 per share until December 31, 2028. The minimum purchase requirement per investor is $1,000, though the company can waive this on a case-by-case basis. AMLM reported its Fiscal Q3 2026 results on August 14, 2026.
What to watch
Investors in the critical minerals space should monitor several specific developments. For Critical Metals Corp. (CRML), the September court date for the European Lithium merger deal is a key event. Any further updates on the integration and development of the combined entity's projects, particularly the Wolfsberg Lithium Project, will be important. For MP Materials (MP), watch for additional defense or government contracts for specific rare earth elements beyond gadolinium. The company's ability to scale up separation capacity for a wider range of REEs at Mountain Pass will be a critical indicator of its diversification strategy. For Lithium Americas Corp. (LAC), progress on the Thacker Pass project, including permitting milestones, construction timelines, and potential offtake agreements, remains central. American Battery Technology Company (ABAT) has a reinstated $57 million Department of Energy grant; watch for how these funds are deployed to accelerate their recycling and extraction technologies. Finally, for American Lithium Minerals (AMLM), look for announcements regarding exploration results from the Sarcobatus Lithium property, specifically the establishment of a formal resource estimate, and any concrete steps taken in their stated blockchain-based capital raising initiatives.,
