MP Materials Corp. reported strong Q3 2026 earnings, but the real story for investors in critical minerals is the persistent challenge of separating rare earth elements from their ore.
MP Materials Corp. (MP) reported strong Q3 2026 earnings on November 6th, beating estimates for both earnings and revenue. This reversal follows an October decline for the company, a major rare earth producer. Albemarle Corp (ALB) also posted a significant Q3 beat, with adjusted EBITDA surging 186%. These results highlight a critical juncture in the battery and energy storage supply chain: the market demands processed materials, not just raw ore. The challenge lies in the complex, capital-intensive steps between mine and magnet.
The Mechanism of Rare Earth Processing
Rare earth elements, or REEs, are not truly rare in the earth's crust. They are, however, rarely found in high concentrations, and even less often found in easily separable forms. The real bottleneck in the supply chain is the complex chemical and metallurgical process required to extract and separate individual rare earth oxides from the mined ore. This is not simple crushing and flotation.
The ore, once mined, undergoes initial beneficiation to produce a concentrate. This concentrate, often a mixed rare earth carbonate, then moves to a separation plant. Here, the challenge intensifies. Rare earth elements are chemically very similar. Their electron shell configurations make them behave almost identically in many chemical reactions. Separating them requires solvent extraction, a multi-stage process where the concentrate is dissolved in an acid, and then a series of organic solvents are used to selectively pull out individual elements. Imagine hundreds of mixing tanks and settling tanks, arranged in a cascade, each one slightly adjusting the pH and solvent composition to isolate one element at a time. This process is energy-intensive, requires precise chemical control, and generates significant waste streams that must be managed. The purity requirements for magnet-grade neodymium or praseodymium are extremely high, demanding dozens, sometimes hundreds, of these separation stages. A single error in pH or solvent ratio can contaminate an entire batch, requiring reprocessing. This is why few facilities outside China have mastered the scale and efficiency needed.

Companies in the Rare Earth and Critical Minerals Space
Several companies are navigating this complex landscape, focusing on various stages of the supply chain, from exploration to processing.
In the lithium sector, **Albemarle Corp (ALB)**, a major player, demonstrated strong Q3 performance, driven by higher lithium pricing. **Lithium Americas Corp. (LAC)**, despite a recent dip, continues to advance its projects, including the Thacker Pass project in Nevada, which is a significant claystone lithium deposit. **Standard Lithium Ltd. (SLI)** is focused on direct lithium extraction (DLE) from brine resources, an approach that aims to be more environmentally friendly and efficient than traditional evaporation ponds. **Atlas Lithium Corporation (ATLX)** is another name exploring lithium resources. **ioneer Ltd (IONR)** is developing the Rhyolite Ridge lithium-boron project in Nevada, a unique co-deposit that could provide both critical minerals from a single operation.
In the rare earth space, **MP Materials Corp. (MP)**, which operates Mountain Pass in California, is a key domestic producer. Their Q3 beat underscores the growing demand. **NioCorp Developments Ltd. (NB)** is advancing its Elk Creek project in Nebraska, which aims to produce niobium, scandium, and titanium, with potential for rare earth byproducts. **USA Rare Earth, Inc. (USAR)** is another domestic player working on rare earth processing. **Critical Metals Corp. (CRML)** recently completed its acquisition of European Lithium, expanding its footprint in the European market for critical battery minerals. **American Battery Technology Company (ABAT)** focuses on battery recycling and the recovery of critical materials from spent batteries, addressing a different but equally vital part of the supply chain.
American Lithium Minerals, Inc.
American Lithium Minerals, Inc. (AMLM) trades over the counter and is an exploration stage company. Its stated focus is on lithium and boron properties in Nevada. The company filed a Regulation A offering on Form 1-A, qualified by the SEC on February 4, 2026. This offering covers up to 80,000,000 units, with an additional 120,000,000 shares potentially issuable if attached warrants are fully exercised. The current outstanding share count is available in the company's EDGAR filings.
AMLM was incorporated in Nevada on March 10, 2005. Its primary project is the Sarcobatus Lithium property, comprising 1,780 acres of mining claims in Central Nevada. The company has stated its intention to expand its exploration and acquisition of mineral properties globally. While the company has identified the Sarcobatus project, the public record does not yet establish a measured or indicated resource for this property. AMLM's activities since 2009 have largely centered on lithium exploration in Central Nevada. The company has also acquired and divested cobalt, nickel, and graphite prospects in Central Nevada, and rare earth elements projects in Kingman, Arizona, and Southeast Illinois. AMLM's long-term vision, as described in its filings, includes creating an interoperable ecosystem for mining assets, potentially utilizing Real World Asset Tokens for capital and liquidity. The company does not currently own any real property such as land or buildings; its assets are mineral rights.
What to watch
Investors should monitor several concrete developments. For **Lithium Americas Corp. (LAC)**, watch for progress on permitting and financing for its Thacker Pass project, particularly any updates on the Record of Decision from the Bureau of Land Management. For **Standard Lithium Ltd. (SLI)**, look for pilot plant results and definitive feasibility study announcements for its DLE projects in Arkansas. **ioneer Ltd (IONR)** has its Rhyolite Ridge project in Nevada; watch for updates on environmental impact assessments and potential offtake agreements.
In the rare earth sector, **MP Materials Corp. (MP)**'s continued ramp-up of its downstream processing capabilities at Mountain Pass will be crucial. Any announcements regarding increased separation capacity or new customer agreements for separated rare earth oxides would be significant. For **NioCorp Developments Ltd. (NB)**, look for progress on project financing and any updates on the definitive feasibility study for the Elk Creek project. **Critical Metals Corp. (CRML)** will likely provide updates on the integration of European Lithium's assets and any strategic plans for its expanded portfolio. For **American Lithium Minerals, Inc. (AMLM)**, the next steps involve further exploration work at the Sarcobatus Lithium property and any subsequent reports on geological findings or resource estimates.,
