On August 13, MP Materials made a series of announcements that signal a significant acceleration in US rare-earth magnet production. The company secured a confidential aerospace deal and new magnet supply agreements. Critically, its agreement with Australian Strategic Materials (ASM) also received shareholder approval. This confluence of events points to a strategic push to build out domestic capacity for these essential components, moving beyond upstream rare earth processing into finished goods.

The Magnet Bottleneck

Rare earth elements are not rare. Neodymium and praseodymium, critical for permanent magnets, are plentiful in the Earth's crust. The challenge lies in separating them. Rare earth ores contain a complex mix of elements, each with similar chemical properties. Extracting individual rare earth oxides requires a multi-stage solvent extraction process. This involves dissolving the crushed ore, then repeatedly mixing the solution with an organic solvent. Each stage separates a small fraction of one rare earth from the others. The process is energy-intensive, uses significant chemicals, and requires precise control to achieve high purity. After separation, these oxides are converted into metals, then alloyed and sintered into magnets. The bottleneck has historically been the processing and manufacturing capacity, overwhelmingly concentrated in China. This concentration creates a single point of failure and strategic vulnerability for industries reliant on these magnets, from electric vehicles to defense systems. Building out these downstream capabilities in the US is not just about mining; it is about establishing the entire complex industrial chain.

Operators in the Rare Earth and Lithium Space

The push for domestic critical mineral supply chains involves a range of companies tackling different parts of the value chain. MP Materials (MP) is a key player, operating the Mountain Pass rare earth mine in California. Their recent moves, including the aerospace deal and new magnet supply agreements, indicate a clear strategy to integrate vertically into magnet manufacturing. The shareholder approval for their ASM deal reinforces this, as ASM is developing its Dubbo Project in Australia, which aims to produce rare earth oxides and other critical minerals. In the lithium sector, Standard Lithium Ltd. (SLI) is focused on direct lithium extraction (DLE) from brine resources in Arkansas. Lithium Americas (LAC) is advancing its Thacker Pass project in Nevada, a large claystone lithium deposit, and recently secured $175 million in financing to support its construction. Other companies are working on diverse critical mineral projects. NioCorp Developments Ltd. (NB) is developing a niobium, scandium, and titanium project in Nebraska, with rare earth elements as a potential co-product. Ioneer Ltd (IONR) is focused on its Rhyolite Ridge lithium-boron project in Nevada, aiming to produce both battery-grade lithium carbonate and boric acid. Atlas Lithium Corporation (ATLX) is exploring hard rock lithium deposits in Brazil. Critical Metals Corp. (CRML) is advancing its Tanbreez rare earth project in Greenland, with its CEO emphasizing the need to challenge China's rare earth monopoly. American Battery Technology Company (ABAT) is engaged in lithium-ion battery recycling and primary lithium resource development in Nevada. USA Rare Earth, Inc. (USAR) is working on rare earth and critical mineral projects, including the Round Top heavy rare earth and critical minerals project in Texas.

American Lithium Minerals, Inc.

American Lithium Minerals, Inc. (AMLM) is an exploration stage company focused on lithium and boron properties in Nevada. The company trades over the counter and filed a Regulation A offering on Form 1-A, qualified by the SEC on February 4, 2026. This offering covers up to 80,000,000 units, with an additional 120,000,000 shares issuable if attached warrants are fully exercised. Each unit includes one share of common stock and a warrant to purchase 1.5 shares of common stock at $0.05 per share, exercisable until December 31, 2028. AMLM's primary asset is the Sarcobatus Lithium property, comprising 1,780 acres of mining claims in Central Nevada. The company's filings indicate a long-term vision to acquire undervalued projects globally and to innovate through blockchain technology, specifically by developing "Real World Asset Tokens" to fund mining operations. The public record does not yet establish proven or probable reserves for the Sarcobatus Lithium property.
